Student Arthur Silva, 12, diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), has been seen as an inspiration in the municipality of Jaboatão dos Guararapes. The drawings, which served to better communicate with the family, evolved and now he has his own exhibition Abril, Autista, Artista, Astro, Arthur, in the hall of Palácio da Batalha, in the neighborhood of Prazeres. In addition to getting to know Arthur’s talent, visitors will be able to purchase the paintings through the silent auction. Just fill in the form, indicate the work of art you are interested in and deposit it in the urn indicating the amount you want to pay. On April 12th, the highest bids will be the winners. The child artist dreams of having a video game, but wants to buy it with his own resources.
Arthur is in the 7th year of Elementary School, at Escola Municipal Otávio Miranda, where he is also exhibiting his works. The exhibition is part of the Jaboatão dos Guararapes City Hall’s Autism Spectrum Disorder Awareness Week, which runs until next Friday. The inclusive campaign has as its theme Autistic Place is Everywhere.
The student attended the opening of the exhibition accompanied by the main supporters, his parents George José de Lima and Raquel Mendonça da Silva. Asked how he felt at that moment, Arthur said: “I feel happy because I’m an artist.”
“My son had difficulty communicating and he did it through drawings. At age 8, just when he was diagnosed with autism, he began to paint. But it was in the period of the Covid-19 pandemic that Arthur developed his art more. Classes and treatment were suspended and painting was the great therapy. We met the plastic artist Heleno Neves, who is a teacher at the municipal school of Jaboatão, and he gave excellent guidance. Today my son has his paintings on display and putting them up for sale because he wants to buy the video game with money from his own work. But we also intend to launch a book about his art, even to encourage other children who have the same talent”, said Raquel.
“Arthur Silva, with his art, is an inspiration to all of us and encourages us to work even more in favor of these children and their families. Each service or action that our management performs consolidates the Unite to Include Project as a public policy in the municipality. This Autism Spectrum Disorder Awareness Week is now law and we will hold it every year to involve the whole of society in a relevant issue like this”, assured the mayor of Jaboatão dos Guararapes, Mano Medeiros.
