Health, safety and well-being at work is essential, says Marta Temido

“THEWe believe that this is a worthwhile public investment, it is an investment with a guaranteed return, and we will continue to promote in our actions occupational health, decent work, and the protection and promotion of the health of all workers in general, and in the public administration in particular”, he said.

The minister was speaking at a ceremony in Lisbon, promoted by the Ordem dos Psicólogos, for the delivery of awards to national organizations with management practices that promote safety, well-being and health in the workplace, the “Healthy Workplaces 2022” awards.

Speaking at the opening of the ceremony, the minister recalled how, in the wake of the covid-19 pandemic, “organizations reinvented themselves” to respond to a new reality, which in some cases aggravated occupational risks, and which generated new forms of work, whether teleworking. was the continuous permanence in the workplace, to avoid exposure to risks.

Marta Temido then left “a word of thanks to all workers in the country, to all health professionals who, in the context of a pandemic, found themselves exposed to a greater risk to their physical, mental and social health”, with the psychologists , he added, also having to adapt to a new way of working.

The public health crisis, said Marta Temido, highlighted the importance of promoting health, well-being and safety in the work context, factors that must continue to be safeguarded in a context of recovery, because “enjoying a healthy and safe work environment is a fundamental right for any professional” and the Government recognizes this importance.

Francisco Miranda Rodrigues, chairman of the Portuguese Psychologists Association, also stressed the importance of a healthy work environment, said that the awards awarded today are an incentive to continue working to promote good working conditions, and stressed that well-being of the worker has a direct relationship with productivity.

For this reason, he added, “it is not acceptable” that in a country the greatest resources are the people who can be wasted.

In a 2019 report, Francisco Miranda Rodrigues said, only private companies in the non-financial sectors had direct costs related to absenteeism, caused by ‘stress’ and psychological problems, estimated at 3.2 billion euros, “three Vasco da Gamma”.

The Order’s initiative is a partnership with the Authority for Working Conditions and the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work.
