Twitch’s impact on the entertainment industry

Successor of the former Justin.tv streaming platform, Twitch was born in 2007 and focused on the gamer audience. The strategy paid off, and it didn’t take long for remote video game streaming to become a global audience phenomenon.

After much success in its early years in streaming, in 2014, Twitch was purchased by Amazon for $970 million. Under a new direction, the platform began to explore other sectors of entertainment more intensively, such as alternative sports and online modalities, for example, but without ever losing its identity with the eSports community.

Twitch viewership numbers are impressive

Year after year, Twitch viewership numbers hit record engagements. According to information from the website “twitchadvertising.tv”, there are currently 140 million active subscribers on the platform monthly. For comparison, in 2015 there were 55 million active users.

In addition, there are approximately 2 billion minutes of video watched per day on the platform, as well as 9.2 million streamers producing content for the community.

As in recent years, Twitch’s flagship remains eSports. Not coincidentally, the top 10 streamers on Twitch produce video game-related content.

According to the portal “rainmaker.gg”, Grand Theft Auto (GTA) V was the most watched game on Twitch in 2021, with 1.8 billion hours watched in the highlighted period.

The importance of Twitch for alternative niches

Twitch also stands out for being a platform that plays an important role in popularizing alternative online modalities that go beyond eSports professionals.

Within this context, we can take as an example online poker, a card sport that has attracted more and more subscribers to Twitch’s broadcast channels. Today, poker player Lex Veldhuis is the most popular streamer in the game, with approximately 300,000 subscribers to the “LexVeldhuis” channel.

A renowned Dutch player in the card world, Veldhuis shares with his followers many live performances in online tournaments on the world circuit, as well as explaining poker techniques in a didactic way for beginner players. Factors that contribute to the channel’s reputation on the platform and the growth of poker.

Since 2016, the year it started on the Amazon platform, the channel has accumulated more than 45 million views — information collected on the “twitchstats.net” portal in March of this year.

Increasingly frequent: famous names in the sport on Twitch

As one of the main features of Twitch is in the way it interacts with the community, there are a large number of sportsmen of the highest level who enjoy interacting with their fans on the Amazon platform.

French driver Charles Leclerc, Ferrari’s highlight in Formula 1, is one of the sports celebrities who is constantly present with broadcasts on Twitch. It is worth mentioning that his channel on the platform, “charlesleclerc”, already has approximately 800 thousand subscribers.

But anyone who thinks that the German midfielder likes to play virtual football on the platform is wrong, on the contrary. His favorite game in the broadcasts is Fortnite, a popular Battle Royale game on the platform.

And Twitch in Brazil?

Consequently, popular streaming platforms generate a lot of engagement on national soil. Today, more than 20 Brazilian streamers have more than 1 million subscribers on their respective Twitch channels.

Earlier this year, journalist and streamer Casimiro Miguel reached a record audience peak on Brazilian Twitch. His channel “Casimito”, which has more than 2 million followers, registered the historic mark of 546 thousand simultaneous viewers on January 25th.

According to the website “streamscharts.com”, this peak in audience put Casimiro’s channel in the top 9 global audience in the entire history of the platform. That said, the fact is that the Brazilian streaming scene has never been so heated.
