The animation section of Netflix dismissed another 30 employees from its ranks, after the changes that had already taken place at the level of management and also following the significant loss of subscribers in the first quarter of this year, which was even more accentuated in the second – a total of one million.
In addition to competition from Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, HBO Max and others, the company was still badly affected by the war in Ukraine when the service of Netflix was cut in Russia.
The pioneering company streaming announced that Karen Toliver would become Vice President of Animated Film Content and Traci Balthazor Vice President of Animated Film Production.
The redundancies are the result of the so-called consolidation that the company has made in the production of animated films, focusing it on a main position, that of Balthazor, although in close connection with Toliver.
Even before that, the company had already fired 150 workers in the United States, including 70 positions in the animation department. The intention is to hire junior profiles to control labor costs, greater discipline with cloud computing costs and cuts in employee benefits.
The smaller team does not, however, mean a reduction in content, in an area where Netflix has already achieved seven Oscar nominations since 2020I have won in 2020 with the short film “If Something Happens, I Love You”.
The remaining nominations include “Robin Robin” and “The Mitchells Against the Machines”, both from 2022, “Beyond the Moon” and “The Sheep Shaun The Movie – The Fifth Strikes Back”, from 2021, and “J’ai perdu mon corps” and “Klaus” in 2020.
The list of titles, between feature films and shorts, includes “Klaus”, the “Apollo 10 ½: A Space Age Childhood“ by Richard Linklater and “The Sea Beast” and soon you can expect “Wendell & Wild”by Henry Selick, “Pinocchio” by Guillermo del Toro and the sequel to “The Chicken Run”, among others.
In July, the Netflix acquired Australian animation studio animal logic with the intention that this and its 800 workers, mainly based in Sydney and Vancouver, can help Netflix to strengthen its production capacity.
The strategy of cuts has, however, been reaching practically all the services of streamingso the neflix it’s not a unique case. Just this week, the Warner Bros. Discovery it resulted in the dismissal of 100 workers, which had been announced previously and particularly hit the advertising sales teams.
After the merger of WarnerMedia and the Discovery, it is expected that costs in the order of 3 billion dollars can be cut. Recently, the infamous cancellation of “Batgirl” was one of the consequences of that objective.
