The current deputy governor of Pernambuco, Luciana Santos, will head the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovations from January 2023. The president-elect, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), announced 16 new ministers this Thursday ( 22). Graduated in electrical engineering from the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE), Luciana is 56 years old and is the national president of the PCdoB.
The party participated in the federation with PT and PV for Lula’s campaign in this year’s elections. The political trajectory of the future minister is long. She has already been elected state deputy (1997-2000) and federal deputy (2011-2018). In the Chamber of Deputies, Luciana was a member of the Science and Technology, Communication and IT, Urban Development and Culture committees.
In addition, she was mayor of Olinda (PE) for two terms (2001-2008). She also served as State Secretary for Science and Technology of Pernambuco, in the government of Eduardo Campos, between 2009 and 2010. In 2018, Luciana was the first woman to be elected vice-governor of Pernambuco, in the government of Paulo Câmara (PSB).
After having her name announced by Lula, she stated that one of the portfolio’s priorities will be to readjust scholarships for scientific research. The values have been frozen since 2013. “We have as a reference the inflation adjustment for the whole period, but these are decisions that will be placed within the overall context of the budget”, she said.
In October 2019, Luciana was convicted of administrative impropriety by the 1st Public Treasury Court of Olinda along with other city officials. The conviction occurred for alleged irregularities in a bidding contract for the management of the energy and lighting park in Olinda, in 2004.
Justice determined a fine of five times the salary received by Luciana at the time and six years of ineligibility. In a note released by the PCdoB of Pernambuco at the time of the decision, the caption stressed that “the sentence itself recognizes that Luciana Santos and the other public agents prosecuted did not receive or embezzle any public money”.
In addition, the party of the former mayor of Olinda stated in the note that “the bid was analyzed by the State Court of Auditors (TCE), without any illicit finding being found and states that it will appeal the decision in all appropriate instances”. Luciana appealed the sentence, but there is still no new decision on the case in the second instance, reported the Jota portal.
Former astronaut Marcos Pontes (PL) was responsible for the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovations during the government of President Jair Bolsonaro (PL). Pontes was elected senator for São Paulo in this year’s elections. After his resignation to contest the election, the portfolio was commanded by Paulo Cesar Alvim.
